Rainbow Snippet from Spokes

It’s almost time for the Tour de France: the MU brought home the first comprehensive guide to the race, routes, and riders. That means your snippet will be from Spokes, where Luca Biondi of Team Antano-Clark and Christopher Nye, a journalist from Boulder, Colorado, have to get their gears in synch.

Here’s a snippet from where Christopher is headed up into the hills and gets caught by the team.  I think Luca liked what he caught.

Christopher’d seen dozens of races where spectators, mechanics, or coaches had physically flung a rider back on the route, pushing until he was going so fast the pusher was left behind at last. Even a helping hand from the team car was possible, depending on what had happened. A coach or soigneur could bring a rider back to speed, giving momentum with a friendly boost through an open window. And there weren’t a lot of places to grab on without spilling the cyclist across the pavement. A rider who got bent out of shape when someone touched his butt would have to work seven times as hard if he had to slow or stop for any reason.

Knowing the theory and having a helping hand shoving him toward the other riders were two very different things. That hand belonged to a man Christopher spent a large and growing amount of his waking hours dreaming about, and there wasn’t one damned thing he could do besides say “Thanks,” and pedal harder.

SpokesPro cyclist Luca Biondi lives for the race. For the star of Team Antano-Clark, victory lies within his grasp—if he can outdistance 200 other hopefuls, avoid suspicion from race officials, and keep his lieutenant more friend than foe. Luca also has secrets, and eyes for amateur cyclist and journalist Christopher Nye.

Christopher understands Luca’s need to keep their relationship under wraps, but chafes at hiding in the shadows of his lover’s career. He’s ready to cheer Luca’s victories, but he knows too well how triumph can turn to tears. While Christopher’s heart sees Luca the man, his inner journalist—and his editor—sees the cycling world’s biggest scoop.

From the jagged curves of the Colorado Rockies to the viciously steep Belgian hills, Luca can ride out any bumps—except rumors about his loyalty.

A few words in the wrong ear could crash everything. With miles between them, hints of scandal, and Luca’s fierce need to guard his reputation, a journalist might have to let go of the biggest story of his career or risk forcing his lover to abandon the race. Christopher and Luca face a path more treacherous than any road to the summit in the Italian Alps.

  1. Added to my TBR 🙂 love the Tour de France…

  2. I like the way Christopher sees the race.

  3. Interesting information for someone who’s never watched the race. I can see where that particular push might be a bit of a distraction for Christopher.

  4. As someone who has ever watched cycling at all, i felt like I learned something just from this small snippet. you paint an awesome picture of how things work in regards to pushing/helping. Can certainly see this distraction for Christopher too in that moment.

  5. I hope Christopher’s not going to be too distracted, thinking about that hand…and its owner. Perhaps he’ll be able to do something about it later? 😉

  6. I don’t know anything about cycling so this was really interesting.
